“On the Yakkers Corner, we yak about development and humanitarian issues and we promote the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
What in the world is this?
Well, just in case you live on this planet, you might know that there are billions among us who are living as happily as they can; who are bent on giving their children a good education; who work to house, feed, support their families; who do or intend to do all the good things they see fit to enjoy their stay on this earth…
Yet, these billions are living without basic essential needs, without adequate shelter, drinking water, food, education…but what they do have is their own creative expression of happiness, of doing with (rather than doing without, as they really do not know what having more looks like); of accepting and not of complaining; of sharing while not having enough…
Their happiness seems to come from a deeper, spiritual space…a space that many others, like us, who have adequate shelter, lots of food and even a choice of drinking water(bottled, flavored, filtered…) are trying to get to.”
Host Bio:
Three decades plus of working at the United Nations, UNICEF, have exposed Muriel Glasgow to different cultures, climes, communities and helped her get a better understanding of the intricacies and dimensions inherent in valuing, building and sustaining relationships, especially among the communities with whom she interacted. Her responsibilities were in providing drinking water, clean hygiene and sanitation facilities to communities in various countries. Using her training in public health ( health education, health behavior, health promotion), coupled with an understanding of local cultural practices and indigenous knowledge, Muriel introduced new health behaviors to various communities in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean, simultaneously appreciating what existed and applying and creating different methods and techniques to influence behaviors. Muriel says, “Observing and listening are two of the most important skills I learned, skills which influence my mindset and my relations today. These two skill sets have led me to produce podcasts on the Yakkers’ Corner, United Nations Yak …” As idea generator, and using the reservoir of knowledge and experience she gained over the years, Muriel provides support to profit and not-for-profit companies in strategy, international outreach and liaison, helping them understand and appreciate the importance of culture in achieving and building sustainable business relationships. An avid learner of languages, Muriel speaks French, Spanish and Creole and has recently added the challenge of Arabic.
